Families: discussing problems and giving advice (Terminale A)
Within a family, we often need to talk about problems and offer help. In English, giving advice (donner un conseil) has its own grammar. At home in Antananarivo, you might advise a younger brother who refuses to study, or comfort a friend whose parents argue. This lesson focuses on one key structure used to give advice naturally and politely.
Ravo says: "My little sister Soa never helps at home in Antsirabe." His friend Hery replies: "You should talk to her calmly. If I were you, I would give her one small task each day." (Traduction : "Tu devrais lui parler calmement. A ta place, je lui donnerais une petite tache chaque jour.")
A retenir
- Pour donner un conseil : You should / ought to + verbe a la base (sans to apres should).
- Conseil plus personnel : If I were you, I would + verbe (on dit toujours were, jamais was).
- Pour deconseiller : You shouldn't + verbe. Exprimer le probleme avant le conseil : "I have a problem with…".
