Education and the school system — Anglais Terminale C
In Terminale C, you must talk about school, studies and the education system in clear English. This vocabulary is useful to write essays, give your opinion in an exam, or one day study abroad. We will focus here on one key point: the words used to describe the school system and how to compare it with the Malagasy one.
Ravo, a student in Antananarivo, says: "In Madagascar, after primary school we go to secondary school. At the end of Terminale we sit for the baccalauréat, an exam similar to the British A-levels, before going to university."
À retenir
- Vocabulaire clé : primary / secondary school, pupil (élève), student (étudiant), headmaster / headteacher (directeur), to sit for an exam (passer un examen), to pass / to fail (réussir / échouer).
- Pour comparer, utilise whereas (tandis que), both ... and (à la fois) et le comparatif : cheaper than, more difficult than.
- Attention : to pass an exam = réussir (et non « passer un examen », qui se dit to sit / to take an exam).

"Soa passed her baccalauréat (her A-levels), then she entered / went to university in Antsirabe." On emploie passed (réussir) et non sat for, car la phrase indique un succès.
