Tourism in Madagascar: Mass Tourism and Ecotourism (Terminale L)
Tourism is a major source of income for Madagascar. Travellers come from all over the world to discover the lemurs, the baobabs of Morondava and the beaches of Nosy Be. But this English topic asks an important question: should the country develop mass tourism (large numbers of visitors) or ecotourism (responsible, small-scale travel)? In Terminale L, you must be able to compare both and defend an opinion in English.
In Andasibe, a guide named Hery earns 30 000 Ariary per visit by leading small groups through the rainforest. He explains: "Ecotourism gives me a job and it protects the indri lemurs that the tourists come to see."
À retenir
- Mass tourism brings money quickly but can damage nature and local cultures.
- Ecotourism protects the environment and gives jobs to local communities like in Andasibe or Ranomafana.
- Useful words: sustainable (durable), wildlife (faune), income (revenu), to preserve (préserver), endangered species (espèces menacées).
