People at Work: Gender, Profession and Unemployment — Terminale A
In this theme you learn to talk about the world of work in English: jobs, equality between men and women, and the problem of unemployment. This vocabulary is very useful when you write a CV, sit a job interview, or discuss social issues in Madagascar. We focus here on one key point: talking about professions without gender bias.
In Antananarivo, Soa works as a firefighter (not a "fireman"), and her brother Hery is a nurse (not a "male nurse"). Both jobs are open to everyone, regardless of gender. Soa earns 600 000 Ariary a month and says: "I am proud of my profession."
À retenir
- On préfère les titres neutres : firefighter, police officer, flight attendant, salesperson, chairperson.
- On évite les suffixes genrés inutiles comme -man ou les ajouts du type "male nurse" / "lady doctor".
- Pour parler d'un métier : to work as a…, to be a…, ou my job is to….
- Vocabulaire clé du thème : employment, unemployment, job seeker, wages, equal pay.
